Omeri hails turnout in Maiduguri

The large turnout of voters in the presidential and National Assembly elections that held throughout the country on Saturday is a testimony to the efficiency of the Nigerian military in containing insurgency, Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Mr. Mike Omeri, has said.

Omeri, who said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday added that the bravery of Nigerian soldiers made for the peaceful election atmosphere especially in places previously held by Islamist insurgent group, Boko Haram.

He said, “The National Information Centre has noted the high voter turnout, the dedication and patience of Nigerian voters and believes that in itself, is a triumph of Nigerian democracy.

“The record-high voter turnout, especially in areas that were previously under Boko Haram threat or control – for example in Maiduguri – is a clear result of the Nigerian military’s successes in securing our country and the Nigerian people’s faith in this government to provide both a safe and democratic election.”

He added that the long lines of voters who turned out to cast their ballots in Maiduguri was a testament to the atmosphere of security and sense of safety that this government had delivered to the people.
