A former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Adeniyi Adebayo, on Friday expressed hope that there would be no violence during or after today’s presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.
Adebayo, who is one of the leaders of the opposition All Progressives Congress in the state, spoke with journalists in his residence in Iyin-Ekiti.
He stated, “I do not want this to be seen that this is coming from somebody in the opposition. But my concern is that the amount of threat and intimidation that have been coming from the side of the party in government leaves one to be a little bit worried. Here in Ekiti, honestly only God can save us in this state, but we hope and pray that things will not degenerate tomorrow (today) because up to this point there has been a lot of intimidation, attacks and violence perpetuated against the members of the APC. We hope that the security agencies will be up to the task to see that they do not continue. It will be sad if such situation persists especially on Election Day.”
He also expressed confidence that his party, the All Progressives Congress, would be victorious after the elections.
He said, “We have campaigned; we have gone round the state and the country, more than the people we are contesting against. We have educated the voters, our level of preparedness is very high; we honestly believe that given a level-playing field and from the feedback we have been getting from the polls conducted, we have no doubt that the APC should win all the elections in Ekiti and without doubt in the whole of the country.”
Adebayo further said his party would not be able to categorically comment about the level of preparation of the Independent National Electoral Commission for the elections because of what he termed as the logistics involved in conducting general elections.
He added, “One can only hope and pray that whatever preparations they have made will be more than enough to see that we have a successful elections.”
