Fourteen people, including a 70-year-old man have been reportedly killed by unknown gunmen in a village in Kaduna state.
The gunmen were said to have opened fire on petty traders, who were buying and selling at Sabon Birni Deji market in Igabi local government area of the state on Monday afternoon.
One of the residents, Abubakar, said, the gunmen stormed the market and started shooting sporadically, killing the 14 people and injuring many others, Leadership reports.
According to Mallam Iliyasu Aliyu, the secretary of Miyetti Allah in Kaduna state, the gunmen’s main targets were herdsmen.
He said: “They stormed the market on Monday afternoon, shooting and killing people. Some of the survivors are now receiving treatment at a private hospital.”
Meanwhile, thousands of soldiers barricaded Gidan Waya, a community hosting the Kaduna State College of Education in Jema’a local government area of the state.
The soldiers were said to have laid siege to the community following the killing two military men, whose weapons were also taken away by gunmen.
According to a resident who identified himself as Bulus, a colonel and one soldier were attacked by the gunmen at a filling station where they had stopped to fuel their car.
“As they were there, unknown gunmen from nowhere opened fire on them, killed a colonel and a corporal. Another soldier was also shot in the hand but he survived it.
“Right now, thousands of security men have barricaded the community. No car is allowed to come in, neither is allowed to go out. Cars from Abuja, Jos, Kaduna and Kafanchan were forced to return because there is no road. We don’t know what to do,” the resident said.
Few weeks ago, there was a clash between some army personnel and some unknown youths which led to the killing of six people.
Unknown gunmen have been wrecking havoc across different states in the country. They have been attacking communities and killing innocent people and kidnapping others.
Last month, the Emir of Bukukuyum in Zamfara state, northern Nigeria, Muahmmadu Usman, was kidnapped from his palace by gunmen.
About 3 weeks ago, a group of unknown gunmen attacked Afolayan Simon Awodola, the president of the National Association of Ondo State Students.
