I’ll declare my assets if elected speaker – Jibril

One of the contestants for the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Abdulmumin Jibril, has promised to declare his assets publicly if his colleagues elect him as their leader.

He also promised to make the running cost of the members of the House public.

Jibril stated this in Abuja on Wednesday at a press briefing where he announced his intention to vie for the position of Speaker of the House.

He said he would align with the vision of the President Elect, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), on the need to cut the cost of governance in the country.

Jibril said, “I will publish the running cost of the members of the House in public if elected Speaker. This will be known to all Nigerians.

“Apart from this, I will also declare my assets publicly. This incoming government has said there will be no secrecy in any of its activities.”

The lawmaker, who is currently the chairman of the House Committee on Finance, said the House under his leadership would take parliamentary activities to the people.

He also promised to pursue the independence of legislature and improved relationship with other arms of government with vigour.

He added that there would be a stronger reputation for the parliament by maintaining what he described as “a robust independence, while working towards a better relationship with the other arms of government.”

Jibril, who is from Kano State, said the House under his leadership would also build capacity of members.

He said the House Committee on Finance under his leadership had achieved many successes such as improving the quality of Medium Term Expenditure Framework analysis and National Revenue framework preparation and monitoring.

He said the Committee also brought to public consciousness the issue of Internally Generated Revenue as a result of which his projections increased from N228b in 2011 to N452b in 2014.
