Uniform of top Nazi official selling for $126,000

The uniform of a top Nazi official was selling for about $126,000, or 85,000 pounds sterling, by an antiques shop in the UK.

Experts used seat stains to determine that the uniform was worn by Nazi commander of the air force Hermann Goering, also the founder of the Gestapo, the secret state police.

John Cabello, the owner of Devon-Parade Antiques in Plymouth, Devon which was selling the uniform, said he bought it at an auction at a private Swiss museum, thinking at was a replica.

But the wear-and-tear on the light-gray uniform prompted him to seek out expert examination.

“Goering was hugely overweight and had a tendency to sweat a lot, that would explain the profusion of sweat in the tunic.The stress levels on the tunic’s folds coupled with the strain on the broaches of the tunic show it was worn by someone overweight. This also proves it was worn for a long, long time by someone who was fat enough to cause it to stretch and wear over a period of time,” Cabello told the Daily Mail.

“He also had a habit when he used to walk around talking to people of putting his left hand into his left pocket. Because of this the wear on the left pocket is substantially more than the right,” he added.

Cabello said that the material of the uniform was of lower quality than was usual for Nazi garments, but that it was due to the advanced stages of the war.

“As the war progressed, it got harder to get materials and quality everywhere went down,” said Cabollo

There was also an effort by Goering to appear less grand during the latter part of the war. This is because as he was going around meeting the population, if he looks like he is living in opulence when they are in poverty it would not go down well.”

After World War II, Goering was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg trials . He committed suicide by ingesting cyanide the night before he was to hang for his crimes.
