Nigerian student breaks 50-year academic record at Japanese University


24-year-old Nigerian student, Ufot Ekong, has emerged the best graduating student at Tokai University, Tokyo, Japan.

Ekong, who studied Robotics and Electrical Engineering graduated with First Class Honours. The last time anyone graduated with a similar Grade Points Average (GPA) was 50 years ago.

He won the best engineering student award in the Faculty of Engineering at the undergraduate category, as well as the university president’s prestigious award for the best all-round student.


Ekong, who is from Akwa Ibom State, is the first Nigerian to achieve this feat since 1965, and also solved a mathematical equation that could not be solved 30 years ago in his first semester.


He also won a Japanese language award for foreigners, in addition to two patents under his name for developing an electric car. He is currently working with Nissan.
