Meet 8th Grader Kory Terrell the new texas’ spelling BEE champion!

Congratulations to Kory Terrell, an exceptional eighth grader from Davila Middle School in Texas, who won the 2015-16 Texan Spelling Bee!
Anyone who grew up in the South knows how competitive spelling bees are, especially in Texas where bragging rights are a top priority. So this is quite an accomplishment for someone this age!

Davila Middle School is in Bryan, Texas. It’s home to about 660 students in grades 6 through 8.

Terrell’s next stop will most likely be the National Spelling Bee, which is sponsored by Scripps, a national newspaper company. The national championship is held in Washington, D.C., usually the end of May or early June. Around 250 students younger than age 15 participate, with a majority of them coming from the U.S., although other countries are allowed to participate.

The competition is very competitive, so much so that ESPN actually airs the later rounds.

The top prize is cash – $30,000 – plus a trophy, a $2,500 savings bond, a reference library from Merriam-Webster, $2,600 in reference works and a lifetime membership to Britannica Online, among other prizes based on the bee’s sponsors.

All spellers that make it to at least the quarterfinals receive something, starting at $100.
