Kouman is what the Ivory Coast people call “tchatchos,” which refers to people who lighten or bleach their skin, despite it being a banned and dangerous product.
Recently, officials put a ban against products that contain bleaching agents that cause depigmentation along with many health issues that affect a large majority of the people who regularly use those products.
The World Health Organization claims that around 75 percent of the women in Nigeria use bleaching agents along with over 30 percent of South African women. Reports say that more than 50 percent of cosmetics sold in places like India contain skin-lightening products and the numbers are rapidly growing all over the globe.
Not only do these products lighten the skin, they contain cancer-causing agents like hydroquinone and high levels of mercury.
