‘The world lost a creative icon': Prince fan Barack Obama pays tribute to the legendary singer

President Obama has revealed he and Michelle were Prince fans as he paid tribute to the ‘creative icon.’

The Purple Rain hitmaker was found dead at his Paisley Park mansion, Minnesota, this morning, his publicist confirmed. He was 57.

Now Barack Obama has said that he and the First Lady ‘join millions of fans from around the world in mourning the sudden death of Prince.’

The president praised the legendary singer who had forever left his mark on the music industry.

‘Today, the world lost a creative icon,’ Obama said in the post on his Facebook page.

‘Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent. As one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time, Prince did it all. Funk. R&B. Rock and roll. He was a virtuoso instrumentalist, a brilliant bandleader, and an electrifying performer.’

‘“A strong spirit transcends rules,” Prince once said — and nobody’s spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative.’

The president ended his statement by passing on his thoughts and prayers for Prince’s loved ones.

The Obamas are the latest in a series of celebrities to pay tribute to the music icon who died unexpectedly. His death came just days after the singer was rushed to hospital from his private plane with severe flu.

Madonna Chaka Khan, Quincy Jones and Justin Timberlake have all shared messages praising Prince and his music.

Chaka Khan, who had a huge hit in 1984 with I Feel For You, a song original written and recorded by Prince in 1979, shared a photo of the two of them walking arm-in-arm from that era.

‘I LOVED him, the world LOVED him. Now he’s at peace with his Father,’ she said about the devout Jehovah’s Witness.

Madonna shared a photo of herself and the Little Red Corvette singer both wearing matching yellow jackets.

‘He changed the world!! A true visionary. What a loss. I’m devastated,’ she said.

Mega producer Quincy Jones tweeted: ‘A true artist in every sense of the word. Gone way too soon.’
