Blaspheming prophet: Kano governor asks Supreme Court to pass death sentence on imam

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has asked his attorney general to file a challenge to the Court of Appeal decision to declare Sheikh Abdul Nyass and five others not guilty of the offence of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.

Imam Sheikh Abdul Nyass was sentenced to death by a sharia court in January for insulting the Prophet Mohammed after being found guilty following a secret trial.

In the first such conviction of its kind in Nigeria, Sheish Nyass has been sentenced to death by hanging after the judge found him guilty of the charges presented by prosecutor Lamido Abba Soron-Dinki.

However, Sheikh Nyass lodged an appeal against the decision of the Sharia Court and yesterday, the Kaduna Court of Appeal ruled in his favour, overturning the death sentence.

Governor Ganduje has expressed his dissatisfaction with the court of appeal ruling and instructed the state attorney general and justice commissioner to take the matter to the Supreme Court.

Governor Ganduje advised the general public to be calm and exercise restraint as the state government would continue to pursue the case with unwavering commitment.

Kano State commissioner of information, Mallam Muhammad Garba confirmed that the state government would seek to get the death sentenced passed by the Upper Shari’ah Court, Rijiyar Remo, presided over by Khadi Atiku Muhammad Bello reinstated.
