Transparency Activists Challenge Okonjo-Iweala Again Over Unreported Federation Account Funds

Dotun Oloko, who in the past famously challenged Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala over issues of transparency and accountability, has urged her to publish the report of the forensic audit report of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

“Given that some two months have elapsed since the reported deadline for its release, we are therefore calling on you to make good your promise topublish the findings of the report,” he said in the new letter, dated January 28, 2015. “Information delayed is information denied, an issue that should be of utmost importance to Nigerians in the context of the upcoming elections.”

In the letter, which was also signed by Oloko’s colleagues at Global Witness and The Corner House, he recalled his previous letter of March 24, 2014 on the issue, adding that they remain deeply disturbed by the continuing picture of gross management, misinformation and opacity by the Jonathan administration.

“In our letter we also asked you to “confirm precisely how much Nigeria earned from the sale of OPL 245 and how much of the proceeds were paid into the Federation account.” However, you have declined to provide this information and we would now ask that you do so. We would also ask that you make public the amount that was paid into the Federation account from the sale of the 45% joint venture (JV) minority stakes in the eight oil mining leases (“OMLs”) 4, 26, 30, 34,38, 40, 41 and 42 that were surrendered by the Shell Petroleum Development Corporation’(SPDC) and acquired by Seven Energy, Atlantic Energy and Eland Oil and Gas.
