410,000 corps members benefit from NYSC skills programme

More than 410,000 corps members have been exposed to the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurial Development (SAED) programme of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

Director-general of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumi, disclosed this on Friday in Kubwa, Abuja, at the 2014 Batch B and C debriefing and 2015 Batch A planning meeting for SAED officers and partners, with the theme “NYSC SAED at 3, Progress and Prospects in the face of Prevailing Challenges”.

Represented by the director, corps mobilisation, Anthony Ani, the DG said the programme was gradually changing the orientation of corps members from desperate search for white-collar jobs to imbibing the spirit of entrepreneurship in acquiring relevant skills and training that have not only made them entrepreneurs but also employers of labor.

Olawumi challenged the corps members to aspire for excellence, expertise and professionalism in order to attract more appropriate sponsorship, just as he assured them of the NYSC’s commitment in exposing them and members of staff to national and international capacity building forums.

Earlier, the director, SAED, Mary Danabia, said the meeting was aimed at bringing together stakeholders to examine and evaluate the programme implementation process for the purpose of improving staff performance.

She called on the staffers to see themselves as primary beneficiaries of the initiative, since the continuous relevance of the NYSC largely depends on the success of the programme.
