Lagos traders reject former leader

Traders at the Iponri Retail Market in Lagos on Thursday elected a new leader to replace a former leader in the market, Mulikatu Ajaga, who they accused of high handedness.

The market leader, popularly known as Iyaloja, was also accused of abusing her office and causing disaffection among traders.

It was gathered that Ajaga was removed from her position as the market leader sometime in February 2014, following series of complaints about her style of leadership. Since then, a caretaker committee had been given the responsibility of running the affairs of the market.

The committee, which scheduled the election for Thursday, asked the traders to nominate their preferred candidates for the post of the market leader.

The ousted leader was nominated, along with one Mrs. S. B. Badmus. When it was time to elect who should be the market leader, most of the traders in the market voted for Badmus, while a handful of supporters chose Ajaga, making Badmus the new Iyaloja of Iponri Retail Market.

Speaking on her emergence, Badmus said, “The people have spoken and I am promising them that I will not disappoint them.

“Leadership is about responsibility. As a leader, you are like a refuse bin and all kinds of people can come around to dump things on you. You need patience and tolerance to endure the hazards that come with being a leader.”

The chairman of the caretaker committee, Mrs. Mojisola Odusanya, said, “It was not easy this past one year. We came in when there was turbulence in the market and thank God that we have been able to achieve relative peace. We have also handed over peacefully and we will go back to the appropriate authorities to notify them that our market now has a substantive leader,”
