VIO arrests, detains 30 over fake driver’s licence in Abuja

Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DTS) or Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police have arrested 30 persons involved in the production and issuance of fake driver’s licence to motorists.

In an exclusive interview with Daily Independent in Abuja, Director of  VIO, Danjuma Garba, also said his staff who connived with the fraudsters in such illegal activities are currently being investigated, assuring that appropriate sanctions would be meted out to those found culpable.

Garba said the fraudsters are cooling their heels at the Police Headquarters, warning that the full weight of the law would take its course to serve as a deterrent to others.

He warned the motoring public to desist from giving money to anybody or his personnel in a bid to obtain driver’s licence, adding that the new procedure of issuance of licences demands the physical presence of their owners, as their fingerprints and images would be captured.

As part of the measures to mitigate incidences of fake driver’s licences in the FCT, the VIO boss disclosed that his organisation would soon establish seven more Drivers Processing Centres to reduce the sufferings of motorists who queue in the few existing centres to obtain licences.

He also revealed the plans of his management team to set up Standard International Drivers Institute for the training of new drivers and re-training of old ones as well as executive drivers to reduce the spate of road traffic crashes in the territory. Commenting on the two computerised Vehicle Test Centres recently established in the FCT, Garba pointed out that Nigeria must join the comity of nations to embrace the use of technology in the testing of the roadworthiness of their vehicles.
