Dr Olaiya Oni, former minister of education is dead


Dr Olaiya Oni, a former Nigerian minister of education and one-time chairperson of the  Labour Party (LP) in Ondo State, is dead.

According to Family sources, Oni, a former Head of Service (HoS) has been experiencing some health challenges since 2012, which was one of the reasons he relocated from Akure to his home town, Ise-Akoko in Akoko North East local government area of the state. Dr Oni died at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC, in Owo on Sunday afternoon.

The source added that the body of the deceased who was also a chieftain of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has been deposited at the morgue in the hospital.

Oni, a seasoned technocrat and former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in the Old Ondo state reportedly died on Sunday after being hospitalized. It was learnt that Oni’s health degenerated three days ago and he was rushed from his Ise-Akoko home to an undisclosed hospital in Owo before he gave up the ghost.

” He has been bedridden for some months”, the source added.

A family source who also confirmed the news and said the family has called for a meeting discuss burial arrangements for Dr. oni

Oni was aged 74.
