The man accused of killing three people at a Planned Parenthood clinic screamed in court that he is guilty and that he is a ‘warrior for the babies’.
Robert Lewis Dear, 57, is charged with first degree murder for killing university police officer Garret Swasey, Iraq war veteran Ke’Arre M Stewart, and mother-of-two Jennifer Markovsky on November 27.
He allegedly rambled about ‘baby parts’ after he was detained at the scene in Colorado Springs, adding weight to suspicions that the shootings were driven by his anti-abortionist beliefs.
On Wednesday, he shouted, ‘I am guilty, there will be no trial’ adding that he did it ‘for the babies’.
Dear made the comments Wednesday during a court hearing for prosecutors to announce the 179 charges filed against him.
‘You’ll never know the amount of blood I saw in that place,’ he added, according to the CBS4 reporter watching the hearing.
Addressing the judge, defense attorney Dan King raised the issue of Dear’s mental competency to stand trial, saying, ‘I think the problem is obvious’.
Dear’s outburst took place at the start of his hearing in El Paso County court on Wednesday. He was not scheduled to formally enter a plea during the day’s proceedings.
At one point, during a discussion between the judge and attorneys about the sealing of documents in the case, Dear spoke out again.
‘Seal the truth, huh? Kill the babies, that’s what Planned Parenthood does,’ Dear said.
Police arrested Dear after an hours-long gunfight last month during which three people were killed and nine wounded.
According to the Denver Post, Dear also told the judge: ‘Planned Parenthood and my lawyer are in cahoots because they don’t want the truth out.’
