Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and his longtime girlfriend, Kia Proctor, welcomed their son into the world on December 24, but waited until Thursday, December 31 to announce what they named their little guy.

Welcome to the world, Chosen Sebastian Newton! Cam and Kia’s baby weighed in at 9 pounds, 6 ounces, and Cam’s already joking that his kid may already be blessed with his own amazing athletic abilities! Cam left in the middle of practice on December 24 to rush to Kia’s side in Atlanta, in order to be present for their son’s birth. He waited until December 30 to reveal the good news, because he didn’t want to take any attention away from his team.
“My longtime girlfriend and I were extremely blessed to have a son last week. Our family is excited and thank you all for the well wishes!” Cam tweeted. “I’ve been quiet about this because I didn’t want to create a distraction for my team and appreciate the privacy in this joyous time.”
While he kept the news private from the public, his teammates (and some fans) knew about the life-changing event, and could see how excited he was. After scoring a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, December 27, Cam cradled the football like a baby.
