Plot thickens to impeach Dickson

Indications have emerged  that members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly may have commenced moves to impeach Governor Seriake Dickson “over allegations of gross misconduct”.

It was gathered that the thickening impeachment plot was allegedly being sponsored by the All Progressives Congress which presidential candidate, Muhammdu Buhari, defeated President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party at last Saturday’s presidential election.

An APC stalwart confided in Saturday Independent that the plot to unseat Dickson was part of the party’s grand design to also control state governments across the nation “through all possible means”.

He said 12 of the lawmakers, who did not secure returning ticket of the PDP, and five candidates of the ruling party who secured tickets but are not sure of being re-elected on April 11, had been “holding meetings with the APC think-tank deployed to execute Dickson’s impeachment”.

He said that the fact that the aggrieved lawmakers had not been attending plenary since the PDP primaries last December should have indicated to the governor that his days at Government House Yenagoa were numbered.

According to him, the first stage of the plot would be the removal of the incumbent speaker of the 24-member House, Konbowei Benson, as soon as the lawmakers reconvene after the recess occasioned by the elections.

He said impeachment proceedings against Dickson would follow immediately after, adding that over 17 members of the House have signed the impeachment notice to the governor.

“The impeachment of Gov Dickson is a task that must be accomplished. The plan is to ensure that the APC wins most of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly seats after which the governor will be impeached”, said the party stalwart who pleaded anonymity.

“We will ensure that we take over majority of the seats in the Assembly during the April 11th elections and impeach him using the numerous impeachable offences before the Bayelsa State governorship elections later in the year. It is a task that we must accomplished”, he added.

He said some notable politicians and their followers in the state had started making overtures to the APC with a view to defecting following Jonathan’s defeat in the presidential polls.

“You know there is already a crack in the PDP in Bayelsa state. That is an advantage we have considered; so, in no time Bayelsa will become an APC state and the outgoing president would lose out completely”, he said.

He said the APC’s calculation was that Dickson’s deputy, John Gboribiogha Jonah, who is former Governor Timipre Sylva’s kinsman, a sworn-enemy of the governor and the President, would take over after the impeachment exercise.
