Abducted wife of ex-Bayelsa Ag gov regains freedom

Wife of the former Acting Governor of Bayelsa State, Mrs. Martha Binabo, has been released by her abductors.

Mrs. Binabo, who was abducted by gunmen dressed in Army uniforms from her warehouse last Monday in broad-day light regained her freedom about 11am on Sunday.

Although the family was silent on the payment of ransom for her release, her husband, Nestor Binabo, had on Saturday told former Governor Timipre Sylva, who paid a solidarity visit to the couples home in Azikoro that his wife would be released soon.

Chief Nestor Binabo was the Speaker of the state House of Assembly under Sylva and acted as the governor of the state when the Supreme Court removed Sylva from office in 2012.

Mrs. Binabo was said to have been whisked away from the warehouse located in her home along the Azikoro/Agbura communities road.

The area is barely five kilometer from former President Goodluck Jonathan’s home in Otuoke.

The bandits numbering about five were said to have stormed the warehouse of Mrs. Binabo at about 11:30am in a Toyota vehicle.

She was thereafter taken to the nearby Otuokpoti waterside from which the gunmen escaped in a standby boat. Otuokpoti is less than three kilometres from Otuoke.

Her husband had, after the abduction, alluded that the hostage-taking of his wife was political, insisting that he could not be cowed by anybody.

Sylva was happy that Binabo was upbeat despite the kidnap of his wife.

The former governor stressed that it was the hallmark of a leader to be prepared for any eventuality that comes his way.

Calls made to the Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, for comments, did not connect.
