The bodies of two newborn babies were found next to a Philadelphia used car lot littered with glass and trash and homicide detectives are continuing to investigate what happened.
Police said the bodies of the baby boy and baby girl were found in the Kensington neighborhood just before 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
The infants were pronounced dead minutes later by a medical unit and homicide detectives were notified. There was no immediate information about the cause of death.
Officials said a 9-year-old boy and his 12-year-old neighbor apparently found the babies, their umbilical cords still attached, on Saturday evening and told their parents. One boy said he thought the bodies were dolls, Philly.com reported.
The boy's father said he assumed his son was mistaken, but called police after the youngster told him the bodies smelled.
Police didn't immediately release any details about the babies, who were found in a weed-filled area full of broken concrete, glass and trash.
"We just want to make sure the integrity of the investigation is protected," Lt. Juan Perez said. "And make sure that these children are properly treated with the appropriate respect."
