Morgan Freeman's plane crash lands in Mississippi after tire blowout

Morgan Freeman, 78, made a lucky escape when his private plane blew a tire, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing at a Mississippi airport on Dec. 5.

The Shawshank Redemption actor was unarmed in the incident, PEOPLE reported. The SJ30 jet took off from Clarksdale, Mississippi, and made an emergency landing in Tunica about 40 miles away. The plane skid off the runway as it landed, causing more damage, Clarksdale mayor William Luckett told CNN. Morgan was not piloting the plane.

Morgan, in his usual calm demeanor, even put out a press release following the terrifying incident. If you close your eyes, it sounds exactly like a monologue he would deliver in one of his classic movies.

“Sometimes things don’t go as planned and a tire blew on takeoff which caused other problems,” Morgan said in a statement. “But thanks to my excellent pilot Jimmy Hobson we landed safely without a scratch,” he added. “I cannot say the same about my plane. I appreciate the concern and prayers for our safety.”
