A phony San Francisco plastic surgeon who smoked during procedures and once flushed six pounds of a patient’s liposuction fat down her toilet was sentenced to 20 years behind bars for serial medical malpractice and sexually assaulting his clients.
Carlos Guzmangarza performed illegal operations on at least nine women inside his sham Mission District clinic, prosecutors said. The 53-year-old, who practiced without a license, was convicted in October on a laundry list of sick charges.
All of the duped patients were migrants from Central America, District Attorney George Gascón told the San Francisco Chronicle.
“This individual was preying on immigrants and taking advantage of the doctor-patient relationship,” he said. “He will have a lot of time to reflect on his reprehensible conduct.”
Police busted Guzmangarza’s bogus Derma Clinic in 2011. The fake doctor used a licensed physician assistant’s name to operate the facility, where he performed liposuction, face-lifts, breasts augmentations and skin treatments.
One woman claimed Guzmangarza smoked a cigar during her 2010 liposuction and forced her to hold her own IV bag during the operation. After surgery, he went to the patient’s home and flushed six pounds of her suck-out fat down her toilet.
The botched $3,000 operation led to infection and required corrective surgery, the patient said.
Guzmangarza also left a four-inch needle in a client’s buttocks and marketed a mystery injectable solution as acne treatment, prosecutors said.
The con doctor was found guilty of sexually abusing two of his patients. One woman said she was assaulted as Guzmangarza performed skin treatment, while another told police the doctor incapacitated her with pills before he attacked.
Guzmangarza has been in police custody since 2011. In October, he was convicted of 33 felonies and eight misdemeanors.
