Portland State freshman football player, 20, dies suddenly ‘of a suspected blood clot’ just two days after routine operation to remove his tonsils

Portland State University linebacker AJ Schlatter has died ‘due to a complication from a minor throat surgery,’ the school said Monday.
The school in downtown Portland, Oregon, announced on its website that the 20-year-old from Canby died Sunday evening in his home.

His father James Schlatter, an assistant coach for the Vikings during the 1980s, thinks a blood clot may be to blame.

He wrote on Facebook: ‘I failed my son tonight.

‘Believe he might have developed a blood clot after his surgery for the removal of his tonsils on Friday.

‘I could not recessatate [sic] him nor did the best efforts by ems and the emergency room staff.

‘Aj Schlatter passed away approximately 9:15 Sunday evening.

‘He was such a inspiration to me and I was and am so PROUD to be his father.

‘In his 20+ years he became a greater man then I could ever dream of becoming.!’

He earlier wrote on Facebook Friday: ‘Surgery went well for AJ however doc said it was more like carving out the tonsils then a surgical removal so keeping him a bit longer due to.bleeding.

‘Even then they also ran into infection and had to drain it too.’

Viking Head Coach Bruce Barnum said in a statement: ‘My heart is with the Schlatter family.
