The management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo has sacked some members of the Association of Resident Doctors in the hospital.
The President of ARD, Dr. Adeyinka Owolabi, said this at a press conference in Osogbo on Tuesday.
He, however, said he and his colleagues would strongly resist the sacking and intimidations and blackmail employed by the management to stop them from fighting for their rights.
Owolabi said, “Sincere attempts from outside the state to intervene in the crisis were resisted by the state government. The state government and their representatives have taken to blackmail, intimidation and unjust victimisation of our members.
“Residency training is guided by policies which are not peculiar to our hospital here alone. The sacking of some of our members was unjustly done.
“They did not follow the due process. They have sacked them on paper but I can assure you that we can not allow it to see the light of the day. They have prepared the letters but we will resist it.”
Asked how many, the ARD president said he did not know how many had been sacked because of the strike but said the association would battle the management and the government on the issue.
Owolabi said the over seven month old strike embarked by resident doctors had not been suspended because of the insincerity of the state government.
He stated that the ARD at the hospital held a meeting on Tuesday and resolved to continue the strike started on September 28, 2015 because the state government was not ready to find a lasting solution to the crisis.
He said despite the meeting held with the government delegation led by the Chief of Staff to the governor there was no agreement reached because the state government was allegedly not interested in resolving the crisis.
He said that the non payment of members of the Osun State Association of Medical Officers after a month of suspending their strike was a clear demonstration of the state government’s insincerity.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Akeem Lasisi, confirmed The sacking of the doctors in a reply to the text message sent to him by our correspondent.
He explained that the affected resident doctors were not sacked because of the strike but because they had allegedly stayed beyond the stipulated time for their training.
